L4D2 Custom Melee Weapons (Proof-Of-Concept)

Lately I have been trying to keep something wrapped up from the community until I got it fully working. It's current state is near to done, but I felt like I would show some pics to show a proof-of-concept. The following pictures show my custom melee weapon in L4D2. This is NOT a replacement, this is a completely new melee weapons with new files.

Sledgehammer in Idle

Blood automatically added after killing Infected.

Blur (Color needs to be changed)

Shove
Image

Things To Do/Fix:
• Blur Color
• New Animations Needed (Using other melee weapon's animations leads to problems)
• New Icon [if possible]

Once I can get everything working and insure that it does in fact work, I will release a full tutorial on how to do this and the source files of my sledgehammer weapon.

I recieved some help with animations, but unfortunately custom animations do not work either, so modders will have to experiment and find a way to get them to work correctly after I release the tutorial.

awesome. :D

i may be wrong, but if you tweak the ani's from the axe weapon, it might work better than the guitar.
the axe isnt in the demo, so im not sure how it looks in game :( but the placement looks pretty close.
+ im not in any way, shape, or form a coder... so i dont know how hard that would be. looks cool though, best of luck with it :-bd

Well, I haven't found any .ani files for melee weapons, if you know where any are located, that may come in handy.

from my limited understanding, the scripts for the melee animations, are called directly from the .ani files for the survivor models. so there aren't any animations for the weapons themselves. but i think if you copy and paste the script for any given weapon, this case the fireaxe, and then change the model names, etc to whatever your model is named (sledgehammer?) it may work. i found these scripts in the pak01_dir file with gcfscape (root/scripts/melee/*) hope it helps. :)

maybe someone can clear this up, as i said, im none too sure how the scripts, and such work. :-B

Would it be possible to do this with guns too? If so, we now have almost endless possibilities. (Rocket Propelled Chainsaw anyone?)

I tried the same method with regular weapons, it does not work the same as melee weapons. Later when I create the tutorial, i'll explain why. Model replacements would work though.

Well would be REALLY REALLY nice, if we just copy a new meele weapon to our left 4 dead and this weapon appears in the orginial campaigns also for other players. But this sounds too good to be true.

Then you can make a baseball bat, like only the preorders have... well i think valve isnt that stupid oO =/

Tutorial will probably be out today or Sunday. Don't get your hopes up though, unfortunately problems have come up and people will need to experiment or deal with the rest of their weapons being screwed up.

i got a question:
if i have the riot shield mod (wich i dont cuz downloading doesnt work) and host a server do everyone have to have the mod to see the riot shield?

I got an idea

not really melee weapon but this would kick ass

a bow with explosive arrows

you shoot the arrow into an enemy (preferably a tank) and after a few seconds the explosive arrow head blows and does MASSIVE damage

although its kinda unrealistic for this game

how bout brass knuckles - you would just punch em and destroy em

or maybe even dual wield melee weapons always wanted dual katanas

It's just melee weapons we're able to add more of. Probably since they all work the same. Bow and arrow would need an entierly new animation aswell.

Brass knuckles would be cool, especially if they're spiked, but it's kinda short range and all that and there is no punch animation, closest thing is the knife slice animation.

Dual wield was perhaps something that Valve wanted to put in but took out coz it didn't work out. It wouldn't look so good either and it's not realisitc. You don't get any good blows wielding two swords, unless you are trained alot in that art. And the survivors aren't.
Seriosuly, not even ninjas would use two swords. Have you ever seen a today's assassin use two sniper rifles or guns? (except in some action movie, they always dual wield in them... and jump from roof tops... and climb on cars on the highway... and survive explosions...) well, realistically you wouldn't see them at all.

Wow, that's kinda cool (or should I say "F*cked Up Beyond All Recognition"?) Never seen a tool like that before, your brains made that up? A FUBAR? xD

Anyways, the saferoom lead bar is an great idea! Can't wait to see that one ingame!

here is some weapons i would like :D

how about a lead pipe?
a shovel would also be nice as some one else posted before,
a steel baseball bat that would have the same hit sound as the scouts bat :P
a combat knife like the one from the game s.t.a.l.k.e.r i really dont like the css knife cuz it looks like a butterknife srry :P
a wretch, a big one
a wooden stick, know this idea is poor but it would be funny to find close trees XD
a meat cleaver :D
a hammer
a pool cue would be funny to find close the pool tables :)

remember those are only ideas, i am not telling anyone to make them but if someone like my idea please respond :D
