The Salmar Theater -- Survival beta released!!

The Salmar Theater -- Survival beta released!!

Postby Ajax » Wed Nov 26, 2008 4:22 am

I have put any further releases of this map on hold for now. I have been working with the Dead before Dawn team doing some scripting so you guys can get your hands on that most awesome campaign. I am hoping to use and abuse the team after that to help me put the finishing touches on the Salmar map.

You can download the survival (beta02) version of this map here.
Please post any feedback in this thread. Thanks.

I have updated the survival beta to clean up exploit spots and added some breakable walls into the apartments.

-----------------------------------------------------------

THE STORY
You have just finished a weekend long, zombie movie marathon at the old Salmar Classic theater. Before you can exit the theater, you are surprised by four infected police officers...you manage to defeat them and grab their pistols.

OBJECTIVES
1:Find a radio upstairs
2:Get to the apartment roof for evacuation
3:Door is locked, reboot the security server in the basement
4:Server needs a key-card, search the apartments
5:Use the card to reboot the system and retrieve a pass-code.
6:Use the code to open the roof access door
7:Get on the helicopter when it arrives

I've used a lot of logic entities to keep things random...the radio spawns in 1 of 3 spots and the key-card spawns in 1 of 8 spots. The 3 digit code to the roof access door is randomly spawned each round as well.

UPDATES--4/27/2009
I've decided to make this map a single map campaign. It will be a finale map...this simply made sense, since you hop on a helicopter at the end. The finale is triggered once you find and use the randomly spawned radio. Instead of just holding out till the helicopter arrives though, you have to complete the objectives while the finale is occurring.

Some short videos of the first 4 objectives.

OBJECTIVE01 (find the radio)

OBJECTIVE02 (get to the apartment roof)

OBJECTIVE03 (door is locked, get to the security server in the basement)

OBJECTIVE04 (the server needs a key-card, search the apartments)

I have tried that but it crashes my game. I've tried it with the Crossroads Mall map to see what it would look like with dozens of infected running around doing their monthly grocery shopping (for brains of course)

That should not happen, well good news for you then. I am working on a menu addon that will let you load custom made maps without having to use the console.

Thanks for the comments guys! I've already started adding l4d models, but am still waiting for the SDK to really finish it up.

StephanBotha: What are you compiling your maps under? I am using EP2 settings. This is what I did: Opened my map under EP2 and removed all the player info from ZPS I had in there. Then I copied the L4D spawn info from this map. I had a lot of non L4D content, so I had to copy all of it to the L4D folders. After I compiled my map, I used the console to open it from the main menu of L4D. I did not get any crashing issues...many missing texture and models till I tracked them all down. I had to run a nav_generate before the AI would do anything though. I have not grabbed the vmf for the mall yet, so I don't know if it works for me.

Wow, really nice...
I remember checking on this, but the hud was from HL2 back then, if i'm not mistaken.

@Hunterbrute - Two thumbs up for the menu addon, at least until Valve comes with some kind of a similar update to the game, when the sdk update comes. I want to believe they'll do something like it...

Nice one there and cool to see campaign project coming along great that soon after release. But what I would really want to see is completely new map SETTINGS. Not another town constructed differently. True that would mean new textures and stuff... just my grain of salt.

Good to see there are some many great looking maps with great gameplay potentials being made! Thought it would have taken longer.

Been awhile so I added a couple quick videos to show what I've done to this one so far. The skybox is trashed still, but I'm slowly re-modeling and adding props.

Some models I was using in ZPS. If anyone is into making up some theater props I can replace these with, I'd smile like this :D

I know there is a pop machine in l4d already, but I'm sure the community could always use variety.
