[TEST] L4D2 Zoey

I've been messing around and managed to get her in-game but it has issues.

Has anyone else tried it? So far this is what i got...

Known bugs:
-It seems to bee incompatible with the L4D to L4D2 tutorial in these forums, see readme for possible fix though.
-Some melee weapons like baseball bat, cricket bat and axe (two handed melee weapons maybe) aren't visible are misplaced (i.e. not on ther hands) when she's holding them. Chainsaw works though.
-It uses Rochelle's skeleton and animations so she looks shorter now, and some animations don't fit so well on her, although i didn't see any actual animation related bugs.
-No voices changed at all.
-Materials seem to differ a bit from L4D1 to L4d2 so the skin and clothes may look to bright on some areas of the level.
-Arms in first person aren't changed.
-Rochelle name appears over her. I tried finding where to change this but i couldn't. Someone else might find it eventually though so if you do let us know :)

Consider this in alpha state, it's a test only and it might not work for everyone, it was tricky to make it work to begin with.

I don't think I'll have time to fix much more but it'd be nice if anyone else can fix more any of that stuff.

I'll try to pack all the files i edited or renamed and upload them in a while. It requires to replace a couple of lines in pak01_dir.vpk also.

It would be nice if someone can test it then and see if it works.

Wow, that's awesome!

What you can do is copy/paste the sound files from L4D1 to L4D2 and change the filenames to whatever they correspond to.

Can you upload a package that allows you to just extract to your L4D2 folder withoug editing any files? Like overwrite the pak file. Then 'll put this up on the frontpage

I can but i'd like someone to test it first to confirm i don't forget to include anything. :P

The pak file can be overwritten but it might not work properly on future patches since you'd be overwritting the any changes made to it with the patch, i guess.

No, Ellis is too awesome! I can't play without him babbling about nonsense all the time :P But I also can't play (or I guess I can) without Francis hating everything....

So replace Coach! ^^ (since I always play as Nick, he's so negative in a funny way and has the most interesting background story)

yes I agree, get rid of coach and rochelle, however politically correct they might be... those two characters suck, imo, and their posture is terrible as well, they run around around like they are about to take a dump or something. They look hunched over, the coach firing a pistol is laughable.


I would gladly replace them with zoey and francis, hopefully one day we can do this using their original skeletons/rigs, otherwise francis will run around like he is constipated and shoot pistols like a 8 year old girl too.


on a side note, rochelle does have the nicer butt though :D

xylum, have you seen how Ellis looks like when he's holding a single pistol. He looks like he has back problems xD Firing a magnum with one hand does not look as badass as Valve would like it to.

Yeah I don't like these characters at all really, it doesn't even HAVE to be the original cast, just one that doesn't suck.

And Savage, yeah, i don't know what happened with their pose and mocaps, but these guys look clunky and don't come across like they could survive a squad of rowdy hooligans, let alone a zombie apocalypse.

Their personality dynamic is crappy too, i haven't heard much in the way of dialog between them that has made me laugh... or even like them, and for the love of god when Rochelle is yelling help me... it's like i am being stabbed in the ears with an ice pick, it's actually annoying to the point of distraction sometimes.

Another thing I'd like to see changed is the point of view, the single handgun takes up like 20% of the screen... maybe it's due to the fact that they hold the pistols at nipple height and against their chest...

the magnum... the females should shoot with 2 hands, and the males should have a little manlier posture for it I think.

Don't get me wrong, all in all I LOVE the game, and think it is an amazing accomplishment in game design. The maps are absolutely incredible, they are so huge and diverse that I am still in awe when I play. The graphics are insane, and the vs game play is as good as gaming gets.

...maybe we should start a petition to have valve give us new characters or at least the old ones back.

I love the new characters, altough i do agree Rochelle can be VERY annoying.
Good job lad! I was about to do this ymself actually, but i couldn't get a hand on the new bones.

Would someone be interested in making a sound mod for this?

Replace all Rochelle's voice commands with that of Zoey

Even if Zoey doesn't have "All" the lines that Rochelle has, we can replace at least the lines that she does have. Then, we leave rochelle's voice for whatever she doesn't have.

Unless someone is really skilled at sound editing and can manipulate Rochelle's voice to sound a tad more like Zoey's :-? ^^

I'm ok with only Zoey's skin! That will be first step in Zoey's domination of the world :-) Perhaps we can force Valve to record some sounds (who knows what will happen? :-) ).

Hi, thanks for the replies and ideas and so on.

I havent and wont edit any sounds because that's a ton of work and i can live without them so i leave it for any another modder who wnats to do it.

I would have use Zoey's original animations but i don't know how to and even if i could i would have to make the new animations on her skeleton or it would be a mess. So i used Rochelles animations which has the drawback of her looking shorter :/

Since some melee weapons don't show properly (see first post), i didn't change the arms in first person view because it would suck not to see the axe or baseball bat while using them. I can live with them not appearing on her hands when im another player though.

See first post for download. Remember is a test only and it might not work for everyone, it was tricky to make it work to begin with.

If you look under models/v_models/weapons/arms, there are arm models for the old survivors, as far as i know they are optimized for melee weapons, see if it works.

Well, you can just put a very generic voice-over, maybe if it's possible.. you can replace the new infected with "Watch out!" (I think she has that) the new guns with a generic "Big ass nasty guns over here!" when she's being defibbed back a shriek from when she's on low life or something, and when she's defibbing a generic "Be careful"? I really wanna try to help, but I don't know the first thing.. so I'm just throwin stuff out there.

EDIT: I'm gonna download this and give my opinion of the skin when i get a chance to try it. But imho her seeming slightly shorter doesn't seem like a real bad thing... their animetions weren't TOO different, and it gives you a benefit of having premade models in there.

EDIT2: Works like a charm, couldn't get Zoey to do expressions aside from talking and looking, but they seemed done just fine so far. Good work.

Sadly when I tried this I just crashed, Zoey stands there and when the map loads it crashes to desktop with no error.

Ive got an idea that just might work but would require anyone playing in the server to have the models.

Im wondering if it would be possible to do the same as you did with zoey to Francis, Louis, and Bill but not replace the new 4 from L4D2. Then I could add their model names to the player model plugin and force them into the game. 8 player L4D with both sets of survivors, that would be awesome.

Hunterbrute, do you use the L4d1 to L4d2 tutorial you guys posted on these forums? That seems to be incompatible because it also loads the same file that one of this mod, making it crash. If it's that you can take a look at the readme and check if the solution there helps.

If that's not it you can look at your "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2" folder, search the most recent crash log file and open it in a text editor. In it search for "Console History" which should be in the line 250 aprox, and it will let you see the console log before the game crash, any errors there might help identify the problem.

I was planning on making a voice pack to go along with Traggey's work, so I'd be more than happy to make the voice pack for this. If you get the other survivors working, I'll gladly mke their voice packs too.

What is the significance of renaming survivor_producer to survivor_zoeyucer? I understand they need to be the same length, but I dont' see any files named zoeyucer in the .vpk you provided. So how does it work?

When you refer to a filename in the pak_dir.vpk file and it doesn't exist, then it forces to VPK system to look for a file outside of the pak_dir.vpk.

So you change the name of the reference to survivor_zoeyucer and because it doesn't exist in the VPK files, it will go look for it in the actual folders. This is how you overwrite the VPK filesytem to use skins/models that you want to use.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
